Miami

Scott headed down to Miami today for the big bowl game. He spent most of the week gloating about his nice hotel on the beach and how warm it was going to be. He enjoyed telling us what he was packing - his swimsuit, sunscreen, books to read on the beach, etc. So soon after checking in he sends this picture from his hotel beach with the caption "It's warm". Currently, it is sleeting, dark and cold here.

Christmas

We had a nice Christmas celebration this year. Christmas Eve we attended a candlelight service and then headed to my sister's for their annual Chrismas Eve dinner. They always serve white chili and they have perfected it over the years and it is wonderful. Christmas morning we spent here and then headed over to my parents for the afternoon.

Official Referral!!

Today we received our official referral from Ethiopia. It was a little anti-climatic as we already knew who we are adopting, but it was still exciting. We received some new pictures and a much more extensive history of her and her medical needs. It was a little daunting seeing all of her medical needs down on paper and for a second there I really wanted to run. But it didn't work so well for Jonah when he ignored what God told him to do, so we are accepting the referral and moving on.

Gingerbread Houses

December has been busy!! Earlier this month we had our annual gingerbread house meeting. The kids had a blast. We were able to meet down at Camp Westminster (where Scott and Amy worked last summer) so the older kids were able to go horseback riding.

Seperated at Birth

As some of you know, GA Tech will be facing Iowa in the Orange Bowl on January 5th. Several of Eric's colleagues at work are alumni and one in particular follows GA Tech football and searches various message boards for anything pertaining to the team. On the Iowa message board she found that they had done various "separated at birth" pictures. And guess who made it on there?

A New Elder

No, I'm not pregnant, but Lord willing our family will welcome a new addition sometime early next year. Our family and some friends know the details of this journey we have started, but here is the story.

Eric and I have were introduced to the Rosenow family and The Shepherd's Crook Ministry many years ago by some friends at our church. The Shepherd's Crook is a ministry to help orphans, in particular those with special needs, be adopted into Christian families. We have for many years now set aside one night during our family worship time to pray for the specific orphans they are trying to find homes for, and have helped them financially when we are able. Late last summer we received an email from them about a little girl in Ethiopia (about 7 years old) who had a heart defect. There are no cardiac surgeons in Ethiopia and they were working with this girl's adoption agency, Gladney Center for Adoption, to find a home for her where she could receive the medical care she needs. Because of Abby, any child with a heart condition pricks my own heart and we prayed regularly for this little girl to find a family. Not us of course - Grace was only 3 months old, we were starting a new year of home school, we now had two children in college and certainly not enough money to pay for an adoption, and besides that we had like 20 other children (ok not quite that many, but many days it does feel like it!) And besides that, the emotions involved with taking on another child with a heart defect was very scary to me. Just driving by the hospital where Abby died brings on such a flood of emotions that to even think about going there and meeting with those same doctors was not something I wanted to tackle. Well the Lord answered our prayers, or so we thought, when a family stepped forward and she was dropped from the Shepherds Crook updates. Three months later we received another email saying that the family that inquired about her had backed out and she was still without a family. We prayed again for a family to step forward for her. Email after email saw no family stepping forward for her. I mentioned to Eric that maybe we should pray about adopting her. He looked at me with the same kind of look that I felt - that is that this was something neither one of us really thought we could do at this point.

On another track Eric and I have been reading through Calvin's Institutes this year. Now Calvin doesn't say anything about adopting orphans from Ethiopia, but the more we read Calvin the more we became convicted. Referring to adoption and the gospel,I read this in another book (written by a pastor that adopted):
"As soon as you peer into the truth of the one aspect, you fall headlong into the truth of the other, and vice versa. That's because it's the way the gospel is. Jesus reconciles us to God and to each other. As we love our God, we love our neighbor; as we love our neighbor, we love our God. We believe Jesus in heavenly things - our adoption in Christ so we follow him in earthly things- the adoption of children. Without the theological aspect, the emphasis on adoption too easily is seen as mere charity. Without the missional aspect, the doctrine of adoption too easily is seen as mere metaphor....The gospel of Jesus Christ means our families and our churches ought to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans close to home and around the world. As we become more attuned to the gospel, we'll have more of a burden for orphans. As we become more adoption friendly, we'll be better able to understand the gospel."
I think that was what was happening as we read Calvin - we were becoming more attuned to the gospel, until finally one day Eric calls and says something like "look this orphan has been placed in front of us -are we going to obey God and care for her or are we going to walk away? We need to adopt her." By the way - this was a long process - it took us about 3 months to make the decision.

Thus started the paperwork - oh the paperwork. I think my pediatrician about fell out of his chair when I said I had to bring ALL of the children in for a well check-up because we were adopting! Poor guy - he had to fill out several forms for each child! We were not the most speedy with the paperwork, but we are finally finished!

During this time we were able to talk to a doctor who had brought this girl to the states for a heart surgery last summer. The defect she has is normally fixed here in the states when the child is an infant. They were not able to do the full repair because if she was never adopted they would not be able to monitor a needed shunt which she could grow out of. This doctor was very helpful in going over the diagnosis and telling us a little about this sweet girl. Of course the doctor also let us know that not only did this girl have a heart defect, but she also has severe scoliosis and significant hearing loss, although the doctor said the hearing loss was not congenital and should be able to be fixed with surgery. We were not jumping up and down with joy to hear that she had more medical issues, but now even the more anxious to get her over here.

Our dossier is completed and hopefully will be making its way to Ethiopia soon. Eric and Amy will be traveling there to pick her up. We do have some pictures, but we are not allowed to post them until the Ethiopian government actually approves us - but she is cute!

We have learned a lot through this process and are very thankful for God's faithfulness and provision for us. Every time money was due - he provided the money. We had a big chunk due this month and we last week received notice that we were awarded a grant to cover part of it. We have been encouraged to see God's working in all of this.

Everyone is anxious to get her here and I will continue to update here on our progress. We would appreciate your prayers during this time.

Thanksgiving

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. The day started with Amy and my sister, Kerry, running the Atlanta Half-Marathon! Later in the day family and one of our neighbors came for the big feast and it was great. I think we have the best Thanksgiving food of anyone! We had a great time of fellowship and laughing around the table. My sister announced she is pregnant with their third child! We have lots to give thanks for on this day - and every day.

Indian Day

Last Friday our home school group had an Indian Day. We painted faces, made clay pots and headbands, painted tepees and had a bunch of games. It was a great day and we all had a great time.

Cross Country Banquet

The cross country season is over. It ended with a nice banquet. The kids had a great season and we look forward to next year.

The Zoo

Recently a friend and I were talking about how we had neglected our younger children in that we had never taken them to the zoo. Sometimes in a large family when you have done something several times you just assume everyone has been in on it; but, we had not been to the zoo since Emily was a baby. To assail our guilt we took a day for a zoo trip. The kids were ecstatic and had a great time (which didn't do much to help my guilt!)




Grace was enthralled with the petting part of the zoo. Matthew was not. He stood by the gate with his shirt up over his face proclaiming very loudly how bad it smelled and that he was in no way going in. I don't think being a farmer is in his future.



The teenagers seem to always find some way to amuse themselves.

Cross Country Championship

Unfortunately the cross country championships came in the middle of our bout with the swine flu. Peter had not recovered well enough to run, although he did go and cheer for his team. Katie had only begun to feel better the day before, but she ran anyway. It wasn't her best run, but under the circumstances she did really well. Molly and Emily (who hadn't succumbed yet) were both able to run. The previous rain, which turned the course into a mud pit, made it even more challenging.

Every championship race includes a parents race. My children talked me into it this year. I managed to come in 2nd for the women and even got a medal! I have to say that we are very proud of Katie this year. She transformed her attitude towards running this year and I think she may even like it a little now. Because of her attitude change and her training harder and more consistently she was able to improve her time 91% over last year. Way to go Katie!

The Swine Flu!

Well we survived the swine flu!! Six of the family had it. The rest of us held our breath in anticipation, but it did pass some of us by. God was very gracious to us in the process. It came through the family like a freight train, but it really wasn't as bad as it could have been. We were able to get Grace on a prophylactic does of Tamiflu and she did not succumb, for which we are very grateful as she, being under two, is in the high risk category. Eric and I did not have it either. Eric actually was suppose to go out of town right in the thick of the sickness. He went out to pick up a few things from the store for me before heading to the airport and came home and asked "Did you pray that my trip would be canceled?". I had not. While he was in the store he got a phone call that his meeting was canceled! Another area where God was gracious to us. We are glad to be on the other side of it.

Sports Saturday cont. - The Big Win!

Georgia Tech beat Virginia Tech 28-23. From ESPN:
The gold-clad fans stormed the field, engulfing a team that didn't mind a bit, and wound up tearing down the goal post in the north end of Bobby Dodd Stadium. No wonder -- this was Georgia Tech's first win at home over a top-five team since the Dodd-coached Yellow Jackets beat Bear Bryant's top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in 1962.

Eric and I were able to go and didn't even mind the freezing weather to watch this game. Scott said the fans were swarming all around them so much that he could not even raise up his arms! It was an exciting evening.

Sports Saturday

Cross Country was COLD!!!! The temperatures were in the 40's and it was very windy, but the kids all ran well. Molly ran her best time so far this year! The parents wished we could be running as we all froze watching!

Nature Sighting

We had to take little break from school one morning when I spotted this bird at the creek. We have a large variety of birds here, but we have never seen a heron around before. It was pretty cool to watch!

Runner of the Week

Each week the cross country coaches select a "Runner of the Week". For the first meet, Emily was selected and for the 3rd meet Peter was selected. We are proud of their determination and hard work in their running!

Elizabeth Turns 4

Today Elizabeth turned 4. She has been counting "sleeps" and was so excited her day was finally here. Everyone at church sang to her before lunch which she enjoyed. Then we had family over tonight to celebrate.

Home School Day at Stone Mountain

Yesterday our home school group spent the day at Stone Mountain. In the morning we had a talk (all the way up the mountain) by an amateur geologist who pointed out geological evidence around and on Stone Mountain that supported a creationist view of the origin and features of Stone Mountain.

We then spent the rest of the day picnicking, playing on the playground and doing a scavenger hunt (finding facts about Stone Mountain) through the museum.



Fortunately I had help lugging Grace up the mountain.

Cross Country Week 2

The rain held off this week and the races went well. Katie placed 7th so she was very happy with that. Peter, Molly and Emily all ran well also.



After the meet we headed to the Georgia Tech game with my parents. Scott dressed and we watched as the Yellow Jackets beat UNC 24-7. Go Tech!! (the rain which held off for the meet drenched us at the end of the game!)
